What's the Matter with Mary Jane? (second in the Epitome Apartments mystery series)
Candas Jane Dorsey
mystery
Recovering from her injuries after an ad hoc detective gig for her friend Hep, our nameless heroine is approached by Pris, an old university roommate, now a famous travel writer, who thinks she is being stalked—stalked again, that is, after a nearly-fatal attack by a deranged fan a year before. Through Pris, Nameless meets the dreamy but sinister Nathan (a.k.a. rich computer inventor dude) and his similarly-sinister sidekick, the bulky Chiles. All three try to interest her in their complicated lives, and she manages to resist until the putative stalker is murdered outside Pris’s book launch and everyone’s a suspect. No-one is who they say they are, but that doesn’t stop our heroine from enjoying who they seem to be—particularly the delectable and intelligent Nathan. Meanwhile, though, the shadow of obsession continues to stalk Pris, and by association our heroine. Bunnywit does his level best to warn them, but no-one else speaks Cat, so background peril transforms into foreground betrayal and murder. In the end, our heroine is left with a set of multi-coloured finger-picks, some smart paper, a taxidermied cat, a lot of knowledge she doesn’t want, a load of grief, and a broken heart.
