Upcoming Book Tariffs in Canada

Starting April 2, 2025, Canada plans to impose tariffs on books imported from the US. While books were initially excluded, they have now been added to this list. You can review the complete list of affected goods HERE.

We Need Your Voice

The Department of Finance is currently gathering feedback about these tariffs. It’s crucial for our writing community to unite and advocate for the removal of books from these upcoming tariffs. Your input is needed before April 2, 2025.

Please take a moment to share your thoughts by completing the feedback form HERE. It only takes about three minutes.

When you reach the section asking for your reasons regarding support or concerns about potential tariffs there IS a character limit, so just be aware of that. Feel free to copy and paste the below message to use:

“With this April 2 tariff, Canadian booksellers and publishers will face unsustainable new costs and customers will be faced with book prices beyond what they are willing to pay. Most books will be subject to the new tariff because they are warehoused in the US by publishers and distributors. Books have both US and CAD prices printed on the cover, making it difficult to increase prices to cover the tariff. Alternatively, charging the CAD cover-price and absorbing the 25% tariff (even short term) will bury many independents because the industry survives on an already small margin of profit. The tariff is detrimental to Canadian booksellers and publishers and will result in long-term negative effects to our literary community”

Let’s stand together as a writing community and ensure our voices are heard!
