Biography | Aviation adventures are featured in eight of Shirlee Smith Mathesonês 21 published books (14 nonfiction books for adult readers and seven young adult novels), as well as short stories and stage plays. She is an alumnus of Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and writing courses at University of Iowa. She holds memberships in The Writers Union of Canada, Writers Guild of Alberta, CANSCAIP and YABS, several museums, and is a charter member of Canadian Women in Aviation International (Rocky Mountain High). Awards include: « The 99ês Canadian Award in Aviation « Distinguished Alumni, Athabasca University (2001-2) « Emerald Award finalist for environmental writing. « Alberta and BC nonfiction prizes for This Was Our Valley (new edition 2019 Frontenac House Ltd.). They include historical and contemporary novels for young people and historical aviation and Northern nonfiction books for adult readers, as well as short stories and stage plays. In 1999 she was awarded The 99ês Canadian Award in Aviation, and is a charter member of Canadian Women in Aviation International (Rocky Mountain High chapter). A new edition of This Was Our Valley, chronicling BC Hydro's three hydro-electric dams built on the Peace River, was released in 2019. Shirlee has lived in all four Western Canadian provinces. For many years she resided in the Peace River country of northeastern BC, but now makes her home in Calgary where she was employed for a number of years at the Aero Space Museum (now The Hangar Flight Museum).
