Biography

Zoey Duncan is a freelance writer in Calgary, Alberta. Her writing has been called edgy and has been nominated for three Canadian community newspaper awards, but she tries not to let it go to her head.

Her blog, zoeywrites.com, is a space for her to write about writing, try out some jokes and meet other writers. Beyond the craft of writing, topics have included women in sports, travel, apartment life, National Novel Writing Month and life in Calgary.

Zoeys freelance career has so far included projects for CBC (Hyperlocal), Avenue Magazine, Calgary is Awesome, Fast Forward Weekly and several pieces for the Calgary Herald.

In amongst the freelance projects, Zoey serves as Writer and Communications Director for ZEDS Comic Communication. Her main project for ZEDS in 2014 is a memoir and local history book she is co-writing with a Calgary surgeon with an expected launch date of June 2015.

Beyond just writing and writing about writing, Zoey also teaches others about writing. She is organizer and one of four instructors with Wit & Writing, which offers affordable seasonal memberships and drop-in classes for writers interested in adding humour to all kinds of writing, from inter-office memos to memoir.

Speaking

Zoey regularly speaks to Mount Royal University journalism students on topics including online journalism, sits as chair of The Reflector publication society board, and was a panel speaker at MRU in October 2013 to talk about covering the Alberta Floods with the Calgary Heralds web production team.

Zoey, along with ZEDS, is scheduled to present at When Words Collide 2014, a writing conference in Calgary Aug. 8-10. The ZEDS team will be presenting Putting Your Wit in Twitter (For Writers) and Writing the Joke That is Your Life. Registration for the conference is open now (hint hint).

Zoey is available to speak to large and small groups on topics of: writing as a career, online journalism, social media, humour and blogging. Workshops on those topics and more are available through ZEDS. You can book her or just say hello via [email protected].
