Biography | Don Meredith is a writer, biologist and communications consultant living west of Edmonton. He has worked as a consulting wildlife biologist on various projects for both private industry and government in the High Arctic, northern Alberta and the Rocky Mountains. He was the Head of Information and Education for the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division from 1989 to 2002. Don wrote a monthly outdoor column, Rubs, Scrapes and Tangle, signs along the way, for the Alberta Outdoorsmen for 19 years. He has published several articles and short fiction on wildlife and the outdoors for such periodicals as Canadian Geographic, Western Sportsman, Alberta Game Warden, Alberta Fishing Guide, and the Edmonton Journal. Several of these articles may be viewed on his web site www.donmeredith.ca The story for his young-adult novel, Dog Runner ( 1989, Western Producer Prairie Books; 2004, Authors Choice Press, iUniverse), was largely drawn on his experiences in the North. It is a story about a teenager torn between two cultures in northern Alberta. The novel won the 1990 Writers Guild of Alberta Award of Excellence for Children's Literature, and has also been published in Dutch and German. His second novel, The Search for Grizzly One ( 2005, iUniverse), is a story about a teenager searching for his grandfather lost in a bush airplane in northern Alberta. It won the 2006 Outdoor Writers of Canada Award for Best Book. Don is a past president of the Outdoor Writers of Canada. He also served on the executive committee of the Writers' Guild of Alberta back in the 1980s. |
