Biography

Lori Hahnel is the author of two novels, Love Minus Zero and After Youêve Gone, and two story collections; Nothing Sacred and Vermin: Stories, which won the Short Story Collection Award at the 2022 Alberta Literary Awards, as well as shortlisting for the CAA Fred Kerner Book Award, a High Plains Book Award, and the Glengarry Book Award. A new novel is forthcoming from University of Calgary Press in Fall 2023. Loriês work has been published widely in journals in North America, Australia and the U.K.; her credits include CBC Radio, The Fiddlehead, Joyland and The Saturday Evening Post. She served as Calgary Public Libraryês 2020 Author-in-Residence.

2018 Mentor, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. With Lee Kvern, acted as mentor to a group of eighteen participants at the Banff Centre Summer Writing Retreat from Aug. 27 _ Sept. 9, 2018. Duties included one-on-one manuscript consultations with the participants, as well as presenting a variety of programs and leading writersê reading evenings.

2013 Mentor, Writersê Guild of Alberta. From January _ April 2013, I consulted one-on-one with a writer working on her first collection of short stories.

present Creative Writing Instructor, Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education. I developed and taught Creative Writing Levels 1 and 2 at MRUês Lincoln Park Campus, as well as an online section of Level 1. I currently teach one-day workshops for MRU.

I provided sixty writers with advice and one-on-one manuscript consultations, facilitated a writersê circle session and organized a two-day workshop program. I also filled in when CAAês 2010 – 2011 Calgary writer-in-residence resigned halfway through her term.

I have developed and presented several day-long and weekend workshops on writing fiction for AWCS. I taught Creative Writing Levels 1 and 2 for two years and now teach a 13-week facilitated manuscript workshopping course for more advanced students.
