Biography

Karen is a teacher and mentor at the Alexandra Writers' Centre, and a writer of non-fiction, particularly memoir. She is a retired psychologist and management consultant and has taught every age group from kindergarten to management executives. Her first book is Consulting into the Future, 2002, and her second, The Full Catastrophe, 2016, a memoir of her two marriages, widowhood, Jungian analysis, healing and learning to live again after trauma. She has also authored articles that range from psychology and management topics, journalistic and academic articles, and history. Her new book, The Village That Betrayed its Children will be published in September, 2024 and is about a tiny southern Ontario village, and its secrets. She loves to travel - in addition to work assignments that have taken her to many countries, her desire to broaden her outlook on life has also led her to Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Syria, the Czech Republic, Peru, and South Korea. She is a dual UK/Canadian citizen.

Awards

The Full Catastrophe has won seven awards: a Silver Medal in the Readers' Favorite Medal awards, Finalist medals in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards and in the USA Best Book Awards, both for the category of "Women's Issues" in 2016, a Distinguished Favourite Award in "Women's Issues" in the 2017 Independent Press Awards, a Finalist Award in the International Book Awards 2017 for "Best Non-Fiction Book," a Finalist Award for the category of "Non-fiction -Relationships" in the Book Excellence Awards and a Distinguished Favourites Award in the Relationships category in the NYC Big Book Awards. It was also short-listed for the Chanticleer Journey award for best non-fiction book, as well as for the Exporting Alberta Award.

Experience

I developed and have taught a memoir course, Memoir Writing for People with Difficult Memoirs for 10 years. In addition, I have taught day-long and short courses, given talks, and radio and TV interviews.
