Biography | I am on a journey to master my writing and have a successful career as a writer. Writing is my passion. I primarily write poetry and prose. I have for much of my life. When I discovered scriptwriting, I decided to learn more and test my writing skills with a different kind of writing. This discovery rekindled my spark for my own writing, which I had put away for many years and decided to revisit. I knew scriptwriting existed. It wasnêt until my husband was asked to do a musical score for an independent horror film that I even considered it. I read part of the script he was scoring for and decided I could do better. I knew, however, that I needed to learn more about the format in order to do it well. I began to research schools for scriptwriting. There are several good ones in California and New York, but I needed one where I live or one I could take online. Through my research, I found Full Sail University. This school not only has campus courses, but they also have online courses. Full Sail had a bachelorês degree program with the course I wanted, screenwriting. I set out to enroll. Itês been years since Iêd been in school. I graduated from high school in Idaho in 1989. Twenty-five years is a long time, but itês never too late to follow a dream. I filled out my financial aid forms via the FAFSA website and requested more information from the school. A lovely admissions counselor contacted me. I started filling out the required documentation. When I found out I was accepted, I was scared and ecstatic. As I said, twenty-five years is a long time. While I knew some things about being online, I knew I had to improve my Internet skills if I was going to do well and be able to keep up with my classmates. My fears were not unfounded. My first course really challenged me. I discovered I was a digital immigrant and not a digital native. My children are digital natives and they encouraged me to keep going. I cried a lot. I wanted to quit. I put off going to college once. I knew if I quit now that my childhood goal of getting a college degree would be gone. Not to mention, my goal of improving my writing and turning my passion into a career I could enjoy would slip through my fingers. My husband sat me down and we talked. He gave me a hug and told me that he would support me and be there for me. It was time to follow my childhood dreams. Dreams are important. My grandfather once told me, –Find something you are passionate about. Find a way to make it your job. When you have done that, you wonêt ever feel like your job is work.” I know he believed this and he practiced this. For that I am grateful. He is an inspiration to follow my passion. He turned his love of fishing into guided fishing tours through a bait and tackle shop he opened. His buddies or tourists paid him to take them fishing and he never felt like he was working. He went fishing every day when he had a tour. When he didnêt, he was shooting the breeze with other anglers at his shop. I am following my dreams and have achieved one of them. I received my BFA in creative writing for entertainment at Full Sail where I also received a Course Directorês award in Childrenês Entertainment. I am currently continuing to take the next step and work toward my MFA in creative writing. Over the next twelve months as I continue my journey and master my writing, I will do just that, improve my writing and complete my stories that need completion. I have a fantasy novel that I intend to have ready to publish by the time I graduate. I have several short scripts and an audio script to finish as well. I intend to know more about the film and television industry in my state of North Carolina, or at the very least get involved and to help to bring it back here again. When I am not writing, or engaging in school, I can be found scuba diving with my husband, reading, or enjoying time with my family. They are my biggest cheerleaders for my journey and my success. I would not be here without their love, support, and encouragement. With everything I have shared about myself and my journey into mastery, there is a writer who inspires me who has said something similar to what my grandfather shared with me. This quote confirms that following my dream is not only important, but is something I should do. |
