We are an Edmonton based writing group originally started by a handful of MacEwan University students. We don't yet meet in person, but this is a future goal of the group.

The purpose of this group is to connect writers of all ages, identities, and skill levels living in Edmonton and surrounding area*, published or unpublished. YEGWrites is a place to chat with other writers about anything and everything, find resources on how to write and where to submit, get writing prompts, and of course for trading drafts for critique and feedback.

All genres and any length of fiction, short stories, non-fiction, and poetry are welcome, but critiquing is currently done on a volunteer basis; we can't yet guarantee readers of long/multi-chapter works. YEGWrites also uses a trade system of draft reading, i.e. if you are uploading work for others to read, you should also be reading drafts others post.

We are an online community because people often don't have time to meet in person and finding a location that works for everyone can be difficult. Discord is free, allows a much higher number of people than many physical spaces, and allows the uploading of drafts for others in the group to read and re-upload with comments. This way we don't need a set time to meet; you can chat any time with anyone who is online. Discord also allows voice and video calls between members for those who prefer a more in-person experience and are comfortable doing so.

A new initiative of the group is to create anthologies with works written by YEGWrites members, with writers and editors solely from YEGWrites.

While WGA/EPL have (for the moment) discontinued the Monday Write Nights at various EPL branches, YEGWrites is hosting online Write Nights on the Discord every Monday from 7-9 PM. Come chat with other writers, work on projects, participate in sprints, and more!
