The Single Onion is excited to host Victoria’s poet laureate, Marie Metaphor Specht, as she launches her debut collection of poems, with very special guest Erin Dingle.
About the readers:
Marie Metaphor Specht is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, and educator living on the unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən- and SENĆOTEN-speaking peoples. In addition to her independent practice, she has collaborated with filmmakers, lighting engineers, dancers, and musicians to create immersive and interactive works. A long-time member of the Canadian spoken word scene, Marie is currently serving a two-year term as the 6th Poet Laureate of Victoria, British Columbia. Her work has been featured at festivals, arts events and poetry slams across the country. She believes in the transformative power of this art form and has had the privilege of coaching and creating space for youth poets for two decades. Marie’s poetry has been published in Oratorealis, Untethered Magazine, Chestnut Review, The Hellebore, and Room Magazine, among others. Her debut poetry collection, Soft Shelters is published with Write Bloody North (2023). www.mariemetaphor.com
Erin Dingle has been a science-loving, straight-talking, queer-living, stage-striding wordsmith here in Calgary for over 15 years. They’ve been YYC’s Poverty Talks! Poet Laureate for the past 7 years. Once upon a time, they were Calgary’s five-time poetry slam champion and a five-time national poetry slam finalist. They have 3 chapbooks and a flurry of credits, festivals and events way too long and too boring to list. But the YWCA, the United Way, CanLearn, Ted-X and The National Philanthropy Conference have all featured Erin’s most important community workshops and performances over the years. Their poetry makes friends with proper puns, with piercingly honest mental and physical health struggles, and with using emotional education and storytelling to define and claim our true narratives and identities. You can call it all The Dingle Tingle!
The Single Onion takes place the third Thursday of the month, nine times a year. Our event schedule can always be found at www.singleonion.com
