2024 ALBERTA LITERARY AWARDS HAVE A NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINE
As the Writers’ Guild of Alberta (WGA) is gearing up to open the 2024 Alberta Literary Awards, we wanted to send out an announcement that the deadline for this year’s awards has changed.
The deadline for submissions to the Alberta Literary Awards will be December 1, 2023.
Please note that the awards will open this year in mid-September, so please stay tuned!
Submissions will be evaluated on originality, creativity, and quality of writing, as well as appropriate fit within a category. The winners will be announced next spring.
The Alberta Literary Awards were created by the Writers’ Guild of Alberta in 1982 to recognize excellence in writing by Alberta authors.
The 2024 Alberta Literary Awards Categories
Prizes of $1500 will be awarded to published entries in the following categories:
- R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature (chapter books)
- Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction
- Wilfrid Eggleston Award for Nonfiction
- Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry
- Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama (published or produced)
- Memoir Award (nonfiction)
- Short Story Collection Award
Prizes of $700 will be awarded to unpublished and published entries in the following categories:
- James H. Gray Award for Short Nonfiction (published in English or French)
- Howard O’Hagan Award for Short Story (published in English or French)
- Jon Whyte Memorial Essay Award (unpublished)
Award submissions can also be entered to qualify for the following city book prize:
- The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize ($5,000 prize)
- The Robert Krostsch City of Edmonton Book Prize ($15,000 first prize, and $5,000 to each of two runners up)
We will also be accepting nominations for the 2024 Golden Pen Award.
The 2024 Alberta Literary Awards Guidelines will be available in September when the prizes open for submissions.
