The Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s casino fundraiser will be at the Starlight Casino at West Edmonton Mall (second floor) in Edmonton from July 30 – 31, 2026. By partnering with a local casino, the WGA provides staffing over this two-day period through members and volunteers in exchange for receiving a share of the casino profits. Our casinos bring in approximately $80,000 in funding over two years, which goes a long way in helping the WGA provide programs and services. This fundraising model is unique to Alberta.
Key positions (General Manager, Banker, Cashier, and Countroom Supervisor) must be filled by WGA members, but other positions may be filled by non-members. Volunteers in key positions must fill out a Casino Volunteer Worker Form (to be provided) and return it to the WGA. Volunteers may only work one position, but may take shifts in the same position over both days, e.g. a volunteer may work as General Manager over both casino dates, but cannot work General Manager one day and Banker the next.
Why Volunteer?
All non-WGA members who volunteer will be eligible for a free one-year membership to the WGA. All volunteers will also get a free meal per shift as well as coffee, tea, and snacks from the casino, and we will reimburse transportation if needed. Parking is free at West Edmonton Mall as well.
