Featured Poets

Dr. Micheline Maylor was Calgary’s Poet Laureate 2016-18. Her latest poetry collection The Bad Wife (2021) won the BPAA Robert Kroetsch Award for best poetry in Alberta. Her previous collection Little Wildheart (U of Alberta Press)was long listed for both the Pat Lowther and Raymond Souster awards. She recently won Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for literary contributions to Alberta in 2022 and the Lois Hole Award for Editorial Excellence in Alberta. Her work has been recently translated into Farsi, Chinese, and Italian. 

Mary Vlooswyk is a multimedia artist whose favourite colour is orange. Her writing has been short listed in contests, and published locally and internationally. Her poem, An Origin Story, recently won Gold at the Alberta Magazine Awards. Shanti Arts published her charcoal drawing, Surrender to the Wind, in March, 2023. She enjoys running and any activity that takes her outdoors. You may hear her play cello where she lives with her husband, on the edge of beautiful Fish Creek Park.

Eugene Stickland writes plays, the most recent titled The Innocence of Trees, which featured Morag Northey on cello, produced last year by Theatre Network in Edmonton. Eugene has written in many forms, primarily theatre, but like many writers returns to the refuge of poetry at various times in his career. He is currently writing a memoir based on a read trip taken this summer, titled A Trip to Saskatchewan. Eugene lives in Calgary with his fiancée Belina Tamayo.

Morag Northey‘s is a cellist, composer, writer, songwriter, director & producer in the areas of film, dance, theatre, and avante-garde sound installation. She has received numerous awards for her work including “Outstanding Theatrical Composer – Betty ” ATP’s “Butcher” 2015.  Her film ‘We Are The Land’’ was awarded the Montreal Independent Film Award Nomination, an LA Independent Women Film Award  ‘Best Composition,”  Onyko Film Awards ‘Best Experimental Short Film’ & selected by the Toronto Short Film Festival, Berlin Woman’s Cinema and the NewYork Arthouse Film Festivals 2023. Morag’s collaborative sound design for Eugene Stickland’s play ‘The Innocence of Trees’, Theatre Network was nominated for Outstanding Sound Design, Sterling Awards 2023.  Morag is looking forward to playing with this knock-out group of master poets’ on this premiere September Soiree!

Sheri-D Wilson is the award-winning author and creator of 13 books, 4 short films, and 4 albums which combine music and poetry. In 2019 she was appointed one to the Order of Canada, for her contributions as a Spoken Word Poet, and her leadership in the community. In 2017, she received her Doctor of Letters—Honoris Causa from Kwantlen University. She is Poet Laureate Emeritus of Calgary 2018–2020. A strong advocate for social change and community building, Sheri-D was Founder & Director of: Calgary Spoken Word Society (2003-2023) Spoken Word Festival, Ink Spot Reading Series, School of Thought & Word Travels School Program, Initiated and developed The Spoken Word Program at the Banff Centre where she served as Director and Faculty for seven years. Sheri-D presently lives between Calgary & Vancouver with her dog Willow.
