Our featured reader for January 2025 is the enchanting Ariana Shelmerdine.
About the Featured Reader
Ariana Shelmerdine knew she wanted to be a writer as soon as she could read & has been writing ever since. With a passion & love for language she could often be found with her nose in a book. She went on to study English literature & creative writing at MRU where she honed her craft. Although she didn’t get more into poetry until she left school & realized you don’t have to follow the rules! This month marks 6 years for her overcoming stage fright & taking the mic. She’s become a regular at the Calgary Poetry Slam & was one of the finalists last year. Spoken word has become her favourite medium as she experiments with rhythm, rhyme & word play, though she won’t box herself into a single category, trauma & mental health are major themes in her work. She defines poetry as alchemy, which she uses as a way to heal & express the hard truths in a way that makes it easier to talk about & find the beauty within it. Her style has been described as feminist with an underlying theme highlighting how patriarchy, religion & media have fed us toxic ideals which has twisted views of what true love is.
