Call for Nominations: WGA Board of Directors

2026 WGA Board nominations are now open!

Deadline for Advanced Nominations: May 20, 2026
Elections at AGM: June 22, 2026 (online)

Are you or someone you know interested in playing a strategic role in shaping the future of the WGA or looking for a volunteer opportunity to contribute to Alberta’s writing community? Please consider joining or nominating a colleague to the WGA Board of Directors.

The WGA Board of Directors sets the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the WGA and provides oversight and governance of the policies, finances and operations of the organization. To do this critical work, we rely on the generosity, expertise and skill of WGA members willing and able to serve on our Board. The Board consists of 10 directors (president, vice-president, past-president, secretary, treasurer, youth representative and four members-at-large).

All day-to-day financial operations and management are the responsibility of the Executive Director; thus, the Treasurer’s responsibility lies in the area of oversight. The Treasurer should have experience in reading and reviewing invoices, financial spreadsheets, budgets and year-end statements for accuracy and consistency, but is not responsible for preparing these financial materials.

In addition to being part of the executive, the Treasurer is responsible for:
• Reviewing and signing off on invoices and payments, casino reports, granting agency statements and reports, etc.
• Reviewing the audited statements of the financial position of the Guild and providing a summary assessment of the year-end financial statements to the membership at the Annual General Meeting
• Reviewing any new financial policies for approval by the Board of Directors
• Holding signing authority on behalf of the Board

Members at Large are expected to participate in all Board meetings and activities. They are not part of the executive.

Term Limit
Each member of the WGA Board is elected for a two-year term, and may serve two terms.
A member who has served two full consecutive terms shall not be eligible to serve again as a director before the passing of two years, except in the case of a past president who may hold office for a fifth year, during the first year of their successor’s term.

Time Commitment
Each member must be available for 90-min monthly online meetings, plus one annual in-person retreat (expenses covered). Board members are also expected to participate in at least one sub-committee. Time commitment averages 2-3 hours a month.

Read more about the expected duties, committees, and role of the WGA Board Members here.

Nominations are welcomed and encouraged from members across the province. We seek interested and committed Board members with a diversity of backgrounds, experience, and perspectives, including ethnicity, race, gender, geography, as well as genre and/or areas of expertise. Ideally no more than three members of the board will reside in the same centre. Please note that the Board currently has three members serving from Calgary and two from Edmonton.

The deadline for advanced nominations is May 20, 2026.
Although nominations can also be made from the floor of the AGM, advanced nominations are strongly encouraged. Advanced nomination materials will be distributed prior to the AGM to ensure that voting members have sufficient time to review the candidates.

Requirements
• Brief bio and election statement from the nominee (maximum 200 words)
• Name, contact information, and brief statement of support from two WGA members in good standing (maximum 100 words each)
