In acknowledgment of Freedom to Read Week and our freedom of expression, we hope you will join the Writers’ Guild of Alberta and the Alexandra Writers Centre Society for a conversation with local author Taylor Lambert and Borderlines member Kelly Kaur about negotiating self-censorship (and external censorship) in our writing lives—particularly with respect to creative nonfiction and literary journalism. We’ll address the creative process, aspects of the writing life and topics related to our freedom of expression.
Taylor Lambert is a freelance long form journalist and the author of several literary nonfiction books, including Rising: Stories of the 2013 Alberta Flood. His book Darwin’s Moving—an exploration of class divides in Calgary through the lens of the moving industry—won the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize in 2018. He is also the host of The Calgarian, a twice-monthly podcast featuring deep-dive interviews with interesting people in the city.
Kelly Kaur is a newly appointed member of the Borderlines Writers’ Circle administered by the Writers’ Guild of Alberta and the Alexandra Writers Centre Society. Borderlines is an intercultural initiative that aims to support multilingual, multicultural writers living in Calgary. Kelly immigrated to Canada from Singapore, and she is interested in exploring themes of being an insider-outsider, race, language and gender through fiction and poetry. She has had poems published in SansCrit, West Coast Line, Singa, and Avenue Magazine.
David de Vlieger is an avid reader with over 20 years’ experience as a litigator in Alberta, with appearances at all levels of court in the province, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Along with his strong personal interest in free speech issues, David has been counsel on numerous freedom of expression cases, and is fascinated by the increasing confluence of our right to free expression, intellectual property and privacy law. David will moderate this conversation featuring Taylor Lambert and Kelly Kaur.
