LOFT 112 PRESENTS: TENT PEG READING SERIES, WORKSHOP READING CHAPBOOKS
February 12: Reading
March 5: Workshop April 9: Reading
May 7: Workshop June 4: Reading

About the Workshop: A common prompt will be given at the beginning of each workshop. Writers will have a large amount of choice in their approach and style of writing. The three mentors act as a mentor authors, modeling writing techniques and conferring with writers as they move through the writing process. Each workshop ends with a sharing of work, group feedback, tips on performance and three writers will volunteer to prepare a good copy for the next month’s reading chapbook (those three will work to prepare for a public reading and publication).

About the Reading: Three young writers will read from the common prompt. An established writer from the larger literary community will read from the same prompt (after the break). All four pieces of writing will be available in chapbook form. By the end of June, our hope is each young writer will have read and had one piece published in chapbook form. Learn more here

FINDING THE UNIQUE IN MEMOIR: TELLING YOUR STORY, YOUR WAY
Saturday & Sunday, March 18 & 19, Edmonton, Cost: $265

Life writing is a way of making sense of ourselves and our world. Narration enables us to analyze and express the complexity of our lived experience, bringing order and meaning to the jumble of the individual and the universal, the private and the public. Anyone who has survived adolescence could likely fill hundreds of pages with anecdotes. Regardless of whether we have lived exciting lives filled with accomplishments of world-wide recognition, or quiet ones spent in the same place, with the same people day in and day out, we all have interesting and unique stories to tell. Often the best ones are hidden, shut away; they take extra energy to pull from the dark, into the light and onto the page. This two-day workshop will use writing prompts to help you access significant memories. Jean and Caterina address the problems of honesty, balance, viewpoint, portrayal of others, and context. They guide students in balancing the dramatic with the reflective and the evocative and in recreating events, times, and places, using discussion, examples, and writing exercises. Visit: findingtheunique.com/memoir or contact Caterina Edwards: [email protected] | Jean Crozier: [email protected].

WORDS AND IMAGES: ONLINE EKPHRASTIC WRITING WORKSHOP
February 6 – March 5, $160 USD. Register at shantiarts.co.

Are you a writer with a strong interest in visual art? Or, are you an artist wanting to enrich your connection with writing? Learn about ekphrastic writing: writing about another art form; for example, music, dance, or painting. The writing may describe the work, but, more importantly, it seeks to enrich it. For this online workshop, participants will write about some selected pieces of art using varying approaches in different writing exercises. Once familiar with these approaches, participants will write about a favorite piece of art, their own creation, or someone else’s work. The instructor, Naomi Beth Wakan, will help the participant deepen and enhance their writing with suggestions. Both writers and artists will benefit, as this workshop encourages taking a fresh look at one’s usual creative outlet. For more information, visit Shanti Arts’ website.
