Indexing: The Art of Writing Reader-Friendly Indexes for Nonfiction Books

Often considered to be a roadmap to the contents of a nonfiction book, a thoughtfully written index can help make the difference between a book being merely entertaining, and being used as a much-loved resource. But where does the index come from, anyway? Is it actually written by a person? Does the indexer have to read the entire book in order to complete their work?

With 190 indexes to his credit, Stephen Ullstrom will explain what an index is and isn’t, demystify the indexing process, and provide guidance for creating an index that will accurately point your readers to the information they want to know. 

This webinar is for nonfiction authors, both self-published and traditionally published, who want to index their own books. This webinar will also be helpful for those who simply want to better understand what makes an excellent index, so that they will be in a better position to work with and assess the work of a professional indexer. Editors and publishers are also welcome.

 

Stephen Ullstrom has worked as a professional freelance indexer for over five years. He indexes a wide range of trade and academic books, with a special interest in Asian studies, religious studies, history, and health. Publishers he works with include Greystone Books, University of Alberta Press, and Harvard University Press, as well as many individual authors, both self-published and traditionally published. When not pondering index headings, subheadings, and page numbers, Stephen enjoys writing fiction and being active outdoors. Raised in Taiwan, Stephen now lives in Edmonton with his wife.
