TONIGHT!! Join Samantha Warwick and Carol Holmes (WGA) to celebrate the 2018 Alberta Literary Award shortlisted authors and their nominated works! We look forward to hearing from five writers tonight and to raising a glass to their work. Featured nominees include Geoffrey Simon BrownIgpy KinRoberta ReesCynthia Scott Wandler, and Deborah Willis. Big thanks to Shelf Life Books for their support and for setting up a pop-up bookstore in the Rose & Crown library alcove. We will be offering complimentary appetizers.

Geoffrey Simon Brown is a playwright, actor, and director born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He is a co-creator of the Major Matt Mason Collective. Geoffrey just finished a two-year residency at Theatre Junction GRAND, where he wrote and directed a new play developed with and performed by an ensemble of Calgary teenagers. His playThe Circle, which was published by Scirocco Drama this past fall, has been performed in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal. His other plays include Michael Mysterious, Night, Time, Still Still Still, Control, Air,and Destroy. He is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.

Igpy Kin is a well-meaning rabble-rouser and celebrated glitter advocate who’s lived in the modest shadow of Nose Hill for 93% of their life. Her commitment issues extend to her pronouns. A proud graduate of the University of Calgary (2012) and a survivor of Concordia (2016), they frequently mean to send things out for publication. Roberta Rees’ writing is described as musical and moving.  Her publications include three award winning books: Long After FathersBeneath the Faceless Mountain, and Eyes Like Pigeons, as well as many essays, poems, stories, and a 30 minute film, Ethyl Mermaid. Writing awards include: the ReLit Award for Short Fiction, the Canadian Literary Award for Personal Essay, the Canadian Literary Award for Poetry, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta Novel Award, the League of Canadian Poets Gerald Lampert Award. Roberta enjoys hanging out with friends and family, playing her guitar, singing, spending time in the mountains, engaging in social/political activism.

Cynthia Scott Wandler is a freelance writer and reporter who has also been published in The Hopper, the #yegwords Coffee Sleeve Project and borrowed solace; she has work forthcoming in Far Off Places! and Understorey Magazine. Living in Morinville, Alberta, she can often be found either writing on paper or hugging the trees that make it. Deborah Willis’s latest collection of fiction, The Dark and Other Love Stories, was published in 2017 by Penguin in Canada and W.W. Norton in the US. The Dark was long listed for The Giller Prize, and named one of the best books of the year by The Globe and MailChatelaine, and the CBC. Her first book, Vanishing and Other Stories, was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Award and praised by Alice Munro for its “range and depth…clarity and deftness.” She has been the Writer in Residence at the University of Calgary, the Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver, and MacEwan University in Edmonton, as well as the Submissions Coordinator for Freehand Books.
